The Bigger Picture
Use the energy from the Battery direct or use an inverter to convert the Energy into electricity:
Depending on the purpose you could use the Battery direct in applications like Lighting, Security and Networking. There are TV's Fridge's and many more appliances which can run off Batteries. All that is required is an energy source, a controller and batteries. If AC 220V is required than you would simply use an inverter. If you don't have an energy source, a charger would be used to maintain the batteries..
Solar PV, quiet and now available as building material
Solar PV :
Solar PV (photovoltaic) uses energy from the sun to create electricity to run appliances and lighting. PV systems produce no greenhouse gases and a typical sized system can save around 1.2 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year, adding up to about 30 tons over a systems lifetime. PV system are usually designed with a minimum life span of 20 years guaranteed energy production.
Wind turbines represent the best value per watt
Small scale wind:
Wind power is a clean, renewable source of energy which produces no carbon dioxide emissions or waste products. Wind turbines use the winds lift forces to rotate aerodynamic blades that turn a rotor which creates electricity. Small Wind turbines are ideal to charge batteries, larger systems produce AC current which does not require a Inverter.
Steam and running water
Use an Alternator:
The use of an Alternator as an energy source from steam and other moving objects can be found in steam turbines, hydro turbines and even you car. Alternators can be used to create DC and AC voltage depending on the application. Wave energy and sterling engines use a piston system to drive Alternators.
Hot Water - Free style
Small investment with a fast payback:
Harvesting the sun to heat up water is another way of benefiting from free energy with a relatively small investment.
Typically the Solar Water Heater pays for it self in less than four years and continues to operate for many more. We stock high Quality Solar water heaters that have been performing for than 8 years (1999 indirect system ). The example on the left demonstrates a basic direct thermo siphon system. We have four different methods of heating water, contact us to help you choose the one that is most suited to your needs.
Cold Water enters through a Inlet (5) into an Insulated Storage Tank (2). From there it flows through a Panel (4) which absorbs Solar Radiation (3). The Solar Energy is absorbed as heat and the hot water re-enters the tank where is exchanges heat with the rest of the water through Convection or a heat exchanger. Hot water exits the tank at the top where it is used (1). The temperature at the top of the tank is warmer than that at the bottom because of Convection
With Hydrogen you can store and generate energy
Sounds like a great alternative?
Well almost, it takes energy to make Hydrogen. Once it is mixed with oxygen, it is highly flammable.
At WSMP we only use hydrogen as a fuel for a fuel cell reactor which produces energy to charge Batteries in emergencys.
We are continually looking for new improved technologies that use Hydrogen and will increase our Hydrogen gas offers in time.
Find more info regarding Hydrogen http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_economy
Make some Gas or get a Solar Cooker
Gas vs the Sun?
Not everyone makes there own bio gas or has a gas line, the alternative is a Solar cooker. There are limitations and may require several small adjustments during the cooking process. We love it on the beach for a spit or potjie. Have a look at some recipes and general use recommendations: http://solarcooking.wikia.com/wiki/Recipes
Renewable energy is everywhere :
Biomass Fuels
Often called 'bio energy' or 'bio fuels', Biomass is produced from organic materials, either directly from plants or indirectly from industrial, commercial, domestic or agricultural products. It falls into two categories, woody and non-woody biomass. Biomass is considered to be a carbon neutral fuel that can also contribute to waste management. Bio fuel made from waste is normally alcohol and Bio diesel is ether pressed from oil seeds or recycled vegetable oil. Gas made from waste is methane refered to as Bio gas.
There are effective alternatives to fossil fuels that can meet your energy requirements
and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. They will either never run out - like wind, the sun and flowing water
- or are continually replaceable - like waste products and crops. These can help reduce our dependence
on non-renewable sources like fossil fuels.
